巨大で写実的な人物が描かれたグエルチーノのこの作品は、旧約聖書のサムソンとデリラ物語のクライマックスを描いたものです。愛人のデリラの策略によってサムソンがペリシテ人に捕らえられ、拘束され失明する場面です。この迫力あふれる、極めて独創的な構図の焦点となっているのはサムソンの勇ましい背中ですが、グエルチーノはキャンバスを人物で埋めることによって強烈な情景を描き出しています。全体に見られる劇的な照明効果は、彼の初期の作品の特徴だった自然主義的なキアロスクーロ(明暗法)によるものです。この作品は画家として頂点を極めていたグエルチーノが、フェラーラのローマ教皇特使で著名な収集家だった枢機卿ジャコモ・セーラの依頼によって描いた数点のうちの1枚です。
