エリザベス・ファーレンは1777年に初めてロンドンの舞台に立った喜劇女優で、1797年に第12代ダービー伯爵エドワード・スミス・スタンレーと、長い交際の末に結婚しました。伯爵のために1790年に描かれたこの肖像画は、ロイヤル・アカデミーで好評を博しました。ダービー伯爵は描かれたミス・ファーレンが痩せすぎて見えると感じましたが、ローレンスはこの輝くような絵に手を加えることはしませんでした。シャーロット王妃の全身像とともに、この肖像画は当時21歳だった意欲的で才能豊かな画家に早くから名声をもたらしました。
