ルーベンス、妻のヘレナ・フォーメント(1614–1673年)とその子供のひとり

この見事な肖像画は、画家自身、二番目の妻のヘレナ・フォーメント、そしてふたりの間の子供のひとりを描いたもので、妻そして母としてのヘレナを賛美する作品です。アントワープのルーベンスの家の裏にあった庭に似た「愛の楽園」を背景としています。1630年に結婚したふたりには5人の子供があり、この作品に描かれているのは1633年7月12日に生まれたフランスでしょう。彼の姉クララ・ジョアンナが含まれていないのは、この絵が裕福なルーベンスの跡継ぎ(全財産を相続する)を産んだヘレナを賞賛するものだったためと思われます。オウムは聖母の象徴であり、そのため理想的な母性を象徴します。
