フェルメールによるこの作品は1660 年代初頭に描かれたものですが、保存状態が非常に良く、彼の成熟期の典型的な様相を呈しています。フェルメールは視覚効果に対して大いなる関心を寄せていましたが、微妙な調整と制作時の修正によって、原色とシンプルな造形の穏やかなバランスを達成しています。構図は穏やかな日々の営みというテーマにふさわしく、純潔を表す伝統的なシンボルであった洗面器と水差しなどの小道具が雰囲気をそえています。この作品は、1887年から1919年の間にアメリカに渡ったフェルメールによる作品13点のうちの最初の作品でした。
