猿候図(詳細)

森に覆われた中国南部に生息するテナガザルは、絵画や詩歌を通して日本に知られている動物です。その泣き声は、詩の中では孤独がもたらす高貴な心、道教では優れた生命力に結び付けられています。日本の禅僧は、中国の僧、牧谿(活動期1245年頃)によるテナガザルの絵をことのほか珍重し、15世紀後半までには、牧谿を模したテナガザルの絵が屏風の主題として好まれるようになりました。一組の猿が、むなしくも水に映った月(悟りの象徴)へと手を伸ばす図は、禅宗の根本的な逆説を表したものです。
