老梅図

老樹であっても春になれば芽を生やすことから、梅の木は不屈の精神と若返りの象徴とされています。この襖絵は、京都の有名な禅寺の妙心寺の塔頭である天祥院の奥襖絵として制作されました。老木の極端な曲り具合と、幾何学的な岩のくっきりとした線は、絵師狩野山楽(1559–1635年)の門人で婿養子だった狩野山雪の落款のある作品独特のものです。山楽は妙心寺に重用されましたが、山雪も引き続き庇護を受けたものと思われます。
