十字架降架

十字架降架を表したこの象牙の浮彫り彫刻は、キリスト受難の場面を描いた現存する5点の飾り板のうちの1点で、残りの4枚はアントワープ、ロンドン、オスロ、そしてパリの美術館にそれぞれ収められています。これらは祭壇の背後(レターブル=装飾衝立)に取り付けられた連続するフリーズ(帯状装飾)として作られましたが、すべてが同じレターブルの一部だったとは考えられていません。同時期に作られた他の石造及び木造の作品同様、これらの飾り板はおそらく建物の支柱に取り付けられていたものが、後年になって大きく平らな鯨骨に接着されたものと思われます。この作品に見られる繊細な彫刻、明快ながらも洗練された動き、ドーム型の頭、流れるような着衣などから、14世紀前半にパリで彫られた象牙彫刻の作品だと考えられます。
