聖母のエリザベト訪問
イエスを身ごもったことを知った聖母マリアは、同じく子供(洗礼者ヨハネ)を宿していた従妹エリザベトを訪れました。塗料と金箔がほぼ完全に残っているこのマリアとエリザベトの像には、水晶で覆われた空洞があり、当初はそれらを通して幼児のイエスとヨハネの姿が見えたと思われます。この作品ではマリアがエリザベトの肩に優しく手を置き、エリザベトは『主の御母が私を訪ねてくださったとは、なんという光栄でしょう』(ルカ伝1:43)の言葉とともに胸に手を当てています。この『聖母のエリザベト訪問』に類似する場面を表した作品が、この他にも同時期のドイツ語圏で作られています。
