王の柱像

この無名の王の柱像は、今はなきサン・ドニ王立修道院のクロイスター(回廊で囲まれた中庭)にあった柱像で、唯一完全な形で現存するものです。光背から聖人であることがわかります。フランスの歴代の国王が埋葬されたサン・ドニ修道院は、精力的な修道院長シュジェールの指揮のもと、中世のフランス様式、後にゴシック様式と呼ばれる建築様式で立て直されました(1122–51年)。立像を円柱と組み合わせる方法は、新たに登場したゴシック様式の特徴のひとつです。
