ユリウス・カエサルと従者

中世のタペストリーでも最も古い傑作のひとつであるこの壁掛けは、3人のヘブライ人、3人の異教徒、そして3人のキリスト教徒から成る合計9人の英雄を記念する一組の作品の一部でした。この作品でユリウス・カエサルは、皇帝であることを示す上部が空いた王冠を被って座り、王座にはローマ帝国の紋章である双頭の鷲の旗が掲げられています。さらに演奏家や廷臣が彼を取り巻いています。左上の肌の黒い人物は、カエサルのアフリカの領土を示しているのかも知れません。英知と勇気を表す9人の英雄は、14世紀初頭にフランスで執筆された『孔雀の誓い』の詩で初めてその名前が挙げられました。クロイスターズの9人の英雄のタペストリーは、著名な美術愛好家だったベリー公ジャン・ド・フランスが所有していたと考えられています。
