猿文杯

ca. 1425–50

貴族の食卓用として作られ、現存する中世のエナメル製の杯の逸品のひとつであるこの作品は、人間の愚かさを扱った身近な逸話を題材としています。眠っている商人から猿の群れが物を盗み、下のほうでは、猿に着物を剥ぎ取られても起きない商人が描かれています。他の猿は、盗みを終えて枝の上で戯れています。この珍しいグリザイユのエナメルの技巧は、現存する他の数点の作例でも見られ、いずれもブルゴーニュ地方の公爵の邸宅と関連付けられています。
