司教座像

リーメンシュナイダーは、中世末期のドイツ南部で活動した最も優れたシナノキの彫刻師のひとりでした。祭壇用の大規模な彫刻の表面に塗料を塗らずに、この彫像の目のようにいくつかの詳細部分を黒く染め、表面に透明釉を施す技法を使うことがありました。この彫刻のモデルとなった司教は特定されていませんが、腰掛けていることから、聖アウグスチヌスまたは聖アンブロウズではないかと推察されており、キリスト教初期の4人の『教会の父祖』の祭壇彫刻の一部であると考えられます。年老いた顔の表情豊かで繊細な彫刻から、この時期のドイツ美術の特徴である心理的な奥深さと宗教的な熱意が感じられます。
