1960年代のポップ・アート作品に日常生活のイメージを投入したリキテンシュタインは、1970年代に現代美術史に目を向けました。彼の作品の代名詞とも言える原色を用い、コミック誌などの商業印刷物の色調と陰影を成すベンデイ・ドット(印刷の網点)を演出しました。この作品では、フェルナン・レジェの有名な作品《田園への外出》(1954年)の1作から身なりの整った男性像を借用し、その横には新たに女性が描き加えられています。女性は顔の部位が著しく縮小また再構成されており、ピカソの1930年代のシュールレアリスム様式の女性像を思い起こさせます。
