ラパン・アジルにて

ピカソは、パリのボヘミアン(自由奔放な芸術家たち)の生活を描いたこの代表的作品で、若い頃に崇敬し、街の随所に掲示されていたアンリ・ド・トゥールーズ=ロートレックのポスターの要素を取り入れています。この作品は、モンマルトルのキャバレーの装飾用としてその店を舞台に描かれたもので、1905年から1912年までパリの公共の場で継続的に展示されていたピカソの唯一の作品です。ピカソは生涯アルルカンを自分の分身として描きましたが、これがその最初の作品かも知れません。彼の横にいるのはジェルメーヌ(ロール・ガルガーリョ)、そしてふたりの後ろには酒場「ラパンアジール」の経営者フレデ・ジェラールがいます。
