アンドレア・アマティは、クレモナの弦楽器職人の草分け的存在として、バイオリンの洗練された形と、彼の後継者であるふたりの息子と、孫であるニコロ・アマティ、およびアントニオ・ストラディバリの特徴的な作風の基準を打ち立てたとされています。現存する最古のバイオリンのひとつであるこの作品は、ヴァロア家の家紋であるユリと、ラテン語の「信仰は今も将来も常に唯一の砦である」の銘、さらにスペイン国王フィリペ 2 世のものとされる紋章で飾られています。おそらくキャサリン・デ・メディチとフランス国王アンリ2世が、娘エリザベス・ヴァロアとフィリペ2世の結婚祝い(1559年)として贈った品のひとつだと思われます。フランスとスペインの間の和平を確立するための結婚を祝う品でした。
