この貴重な琴は、日本の装飾美術と音楽芸術の力作です。近代琴楽の基礎は、それ以前にあった強い伝統に基づいて17世紀に確立されました。おびただしい量の象嵌と後藤程乗による見事な装飾のあるこの琴は、音楽史上における近代琴楽の重要な発展の証です。程乗は金工として名高い後藤家の9代目として最も腕のたつ職人でした。この琴はまた、所有者(有力な烏丸家)の社会的地位と、日本の象徴としての京都の役割を反映しています。豪華な漆塗りの箱は、19世紀初頭のものであり、金の鶴(烏丸家の家紋)と雁の装飾が施されています。
