牛祭りを描いた布絵

ピチワイと呼ばれるインドの布絵は、寺院の本尊の背面に掛けられた大きな絵でした。17世紀にはクリシュナをシュリナトジー(幼少の王様)として崇拝したバラバチャーリャ派の本尊が、ラジャスターン地方のウダイプール近くにあるナサダヴァーラに祭られました。同じ頃、数人の裕福なシュリナトジー信者がデカンへ移住しましたが、この絵は当地で描かれたものと思われます。藍染の下地に金と銀をふんだんに使った様式は、18世紀末のデカンで描かれたピチワイに特有の様式ですが、図像は他の作品とは異なり、クリシュナが子牛の世話人から牛飼いに昇格したことを祝う、晩秋の牛祭りのために作られたものと思われます。
