宮廷衣装

18世紀の衣装における最も注目される例は非常に極端な造形のもので、横の線はほぼ体の線に合わせて作られていますが、前面または背面から見るとかなり幅広に仕立てられています。幅が約140cmあるこのイギリス製のガウンのスカートは、柳の枝または鯨の骨を麻で覆ったパニエ、または張り骨で支えられていました。パニエの入ったガウンを着た女性は、通常出入り口を通るときは横向きに、すべるように優雅に入るのがエチケットでした。このガウンは、撚銀糸と銀の縁取りで飾られた贅沢な1枚の絹ブロケード布の平面であると言っても過言ではないでしょう。これは着用する女性の富と社会的地位を誇示するための広告の役割を果たしました。
