이 작품은 세라믹 재질의 대형 향로로, 남부 멕시코와 과테말라 인접 지역에 살던 고대 마야인들이 내화점토로 제작한 것 중 가장 복잡한 형태의 조각품입니다. 두 부분으로 제작된 이향로는 위풍당당한 자세로 앉아 있는 마야 제왕의 모습을 그린 것으로 추정됩니다. 그는 웅장한 머리 장식을 쓰고 귀에 장신구를 달고 있으며 신에게 바치는 제물을 놓는 쟁반을 들고 있습니다. 영혼과 신들에게 바치는 제물을 옮길 것이라고 추정되는 연기는 신성한 마야의 종교의식에서 빠질 수 없는 요소였습니다.
