国王座像の吊り香炉

コパル樹脂と香を入れる大型の陶器の吊り香炉は、メキシコ南部と隣接のグアテマラに在住したマヤ族が作った、陶器彫刻のなかでも最も複雑なもののひとつです。ふたつの部分から成るこの香炉は、威厳あるポーズで座るマヤ国王をうつしていると考えられています。華やかな被り物と耳飾りを着け、供え物用のお盆を持っています。マヤ文化では、煙は超自然界の精霊と神々に捧げ物を届けると信じられ、すべての祭式において不可欠な要素でした。
