生活在墨西哥南部及附近危地马拉地区的古玛雅人曾制作烧陶工艺品，其中最为复杂的就属大型陶香炉（装柯巴脂和香的容器）了。这尊由两个部分组成的香炉上塑造了一位呈帝王坐姿的玛雅国王像。他戴着大头饰和耳饰，捧着一只供盘。玛雅人认为烟雾能把祭品带给超自然界的神灵，因此烟雾是一切玛雅神圣仪式中必不可少的元素。
