이 작품은 하이 르네상스기 라파엘로의 스타일을 재현하려는 코로의 작품 중에서 가장 뛰어난 성취로 평가됩니다. 이 작품은 워싱턴 국립미술관에 소장된 빈도 알토비티의 초상(코로가 활동하던 시대에는 라파엘의 자화상이라고 믿었던)과 구도가 아주 유사합니다. 그러나 의도적인 소묘에도 불구하고 몇 차례의 수정을 거쳐 점차적으로 완성된 작품입니다. 그는 원래 이 작품을 첼로를 연주하는 뮤즈 폴리힘니아를 묘사하려고 구상했던 것으로 보입니다. 물감이 덧칠해져 겉으로는 보이지 않지만 캔버스를 X선으로 비춰보면 뮤즈의 모습이 드러납니다. 인물의 머리에 꽂은 아이비는 예술의 불멸성을 상징하는 것으로 보입니다. 이 그림은 화가의 서명도 없이 미완성으로 남아 있는 작품으로, 코로의 생전에는 전시되지 못하였습니다.
