앙상블
1820년대 여성의 드레스에서 유행했던 허리를 높게 올린 복식은 동시대 남성복에도 다소 영향을 미쳤습니다. 상의는 흉부를 따라 재단하였으며 높이 올린 바지의 허리는 다리 길이를 강조합니다. 미미해 보이지만 이 스타일의 변형된 비례는 풍자의 대상이었습니다. 19세기에 진화한 남성 정장은 유행의 변화를 점점 따르지 않게 되면서 남성 앙상블의 가장 개성적인 요소들은 크라바트(넥타이의 전신), 조끼, 그리고 평상복에서는 셔츠의 원단으로 단순화되었습니다. 멋내기 좋아하는 남성의 입장에서 보면, 남성 정장은 “평등을 나타내고 고통을 주는 제복”이 되어 버렸습니다.
