In the Kirtlington Park accounts for March 27, 1749, Sir James Dashwood recorded a payment of fifty pounds to Wootton that was presumably for this picture. The convivial Wootton was popular with the landed classes and his charges were high. In this landscape, he combines figures influenced by the Dutch genre painting tradition with an English setting that includes a classical temple on a hill, a Claudian motif.
