大都会博物馆藏有著名版画家阿尔布雷特·丢勒的五百余件版画作品。《忧郁I》作为他最令人费解的版画作品之一，描绘了丢勒的智识境界，延伸开来说，也是一幅丢勒对自己精神面貌的自画像。中世纪哲学认为每个人的气质和体质都被四种体液中的一种所主导，而忧郁质最不受欢迎，人们认为忧郁的人最有可能陷入疯狂。但文艺复兴时期的观念则认为，忧郁同样与创造性的天才有关。此图上，“忧郁”的人形化身长着翅膀，拿着一只测径器，周围散落着其他与几何学相关的工具；几何学是“自由七艺”中艺术创作的基石。
