照夜白是唐玄宗（712 – 56年在位）宠爱的一匹战马，这幅《照夜白图》或许是中国艺术中最广为人知的骏马图。中国传说中有来自外邦的“天马”，亦称“汗血宝马”，实为龙的化身；画中性情刚烈的骏马可谓其缩影。据称此画的作者是韩干，他笔下的骏马不仅形态逼真，其神态也跃然纸上。虽然据传比起研习古人所作的骏马图，韩干更愿亲赴马厩观察，但这幅骏马图中马的轮廓和形体比例显然都承袭自前人的传统手笔。
