雪村周继（日本，约1504–1589年）山水猿图

产自中国南部茂密山林中的猿猴通过绘画与诗歌作品为日本所知。诗歌中常用猿声形容高洁的孤独，道教传说也赋予猿猴超强的生命力。日本禅宗僧人珍爱中国僧人牧溪（活跃于约1245年）所画的猿图。到十五世纪晚期，以牧溪风格所画的猿猴已是屏风上最常见的装饰。此图上一串猿猴伸出手臂，正徒劳地打捞水中月，月亮在禅宗中象征觉悟。这幅作品以图像的形式诠释了一则重要的禅宗公案。
