1945年，波洛克携画家妻子李·科瑞丝娜一同搬到纽约州东汉普顿的斯普林斯地区的一栋小房子里。在其后的数年中，波洛克在自家仓库那相对隔绝的环境中工作，逐渐发展出他那独具特色的滴画技巧。他用简单的木棍或是搅拌颜料的棍子搭配自制的珐琅漆创作（有时直接从罐里往外倒颜料），把书法式的色彩线条直接甩到地上未拉伸的原始帆布上。《秋韵》是他优秀的滴画作品中最大的一件，大都会博物馆在波洛克不幸早逝的次年从科瑞丝娜手中买下这幅画。
