1708年,约翰·弗里德里希·波特戈重新发现了一种在中国已经流行的硬瓷制作工艺,从而开创了一项新的奢侈品产业。瓷质乐器制作尤其不易,因为干燥和烧制过程中瓷器会极大地收缩。为此工匠不得不制作大型模具来确保成品的准确规格。木笛很容易通过钻音孔来精调和整音,但瓷笛的后期调整却困难重重。这支长笛的瓷质部分烧制完成后,一位金匠会接着完成金工,包括制作接合处、插孔、笛头帽和音键。瓷质长笛和钟琴都很稀少,陶笛则较为普遍。像这样的长笛在贵族中普遍受到青睐。
