印度布艺画(布面上的大型画幅)往往悬挂在一座寺庙的主造像之后。在十七世纪,以信奉克利须那的湿瑞那斯吉(童王)化身为主的瓦拉拔恰亚教派在纳斯达瓦拉建起了教派造像,即拉贾斯坦邦境内靠近乌代普尔的地方。大约在此时,一小批信奉湿瑞那斯吉的富裕信徒搬迁至德干高原,这幅画可能就是在那里委托制作的。其靛青底和丰富的金银都是十八世纪晚期德干布艺画的典型特征。画面上不同寻常的图案表明,这是为深秋举行的母牛节而制,以庆祝克利须那从看管牛犊晋升为牛郎。
