十八世纪最出色的礼服都有极端的比例，从侧面看只比身体略宽一点，但从正面和背面看却出奇地阔大。这件英式礼服的裙摆有55 英寸宽，由裹在亚麻布里的弯曲柳条或鲸骨制成的裙撑（边箍）支撑起来。一位女士若是穿着这种带裙撑的礼服，在进出多数门口时就要平滑地侧身通过，这是礼仪的规定。这件礼服可以说是展示奢华丝锦缎的平面舞台，锦缎上饰有包银丝线的刺绣和其它银边饰。这在服装界就相当于是一张宣告穿着者财富和地位的广告牌。
