من المرجّح أنّ جون الشجاع، دوق بورغندي (توفّي 1419م) أو زوجته مارغريت دو بافاريا من أمر بإنجاز هذه القطعة الرائعة لدير بور كلايفس الذي أسّساه في بولينيي. ينظر المسيح مُجعّد الشعر إلى أمه وهي تمسكه في حضنها مع الكتاب. ويُمثّل هذا المشهد الرقيق موضوعًا لاهوتيًّا متطوّرًا تشير إليه الكتابة اللاتينية على المقعد من كتاب سيراخ المقدّس الذي يمجّد الحكمة القائلة: منذ البداية وقبل العالم، خُلقتُ... (24:14). ومع حلول القرن الثالث عشر الميلادي أصبحت الكنيسة تعدّ ذلك إشارة إلى مريم.
