Girls Singing
Frances Grimes American
Grimes designed "Girls Singing," also known as "Spring, North and South," and its companion piece (44.44.2) as a pair to be placed back to back on either side of a fountain. Classicizing in spirit, each panel depicts an adolescent female nude shown seated, looking back over her shoulder nearest the viewer, and when the panels are installed together, looking at each other. This figure holds a dogwood branch, while the girls in the other panel (44.44.2) holds a sanxian, a Chinese long-neck lute.
