Susan B. Anthony
Johnson first modeled a bust of leading women's suffrage advocate Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906) in 1886, based on sittings at Anthony's home in Rochester, New York. In 1893, it was displayed, along with busts of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, in the Court of Honor in the Woman’s Building at the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition. Johnson completed numerous replicas of the Anthony portrait; the Metropolitan’s version was presented in 1906 in honor of Anthony’s 86th birthday. In 1921, Johnson completed a "Memorial to the Pioneers of the Women's Suffrage Movement" to Anthony, Stanton, and Mott, designed for the Rotunda of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. Johnson herself has been referred to as "the sculptor of the women's movement."
