Duke Fulco di Verdura first created the Maltese cross cuff in the 1930s for his friend and muse Coco Chanel. Having earlier designed Byzantine-inspired Maltese cross brooches, Verdura applied two of them to a pair of white enameled cuffs, thereby fashioning one of the firm’s most enduring signature styles. These bracelets were copied by leading costume jewelers such as Verdura’s friend Kenneth Jay Lane, whose pair of bracelets is exhibited nearby.
