Covered Inkwell

Designer Designed by Louis C. Tiffany American
ca. 1905–20
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This inkwell is an example of the "fancy goods" that were among Tiffany's more affordable merchandise. The "Etched Metal and Glass" desk set in the grapevine and pine-needle patterns creates an effect similar to that of stained-glass windows. In addition to the typical patinated green and brown finishes, a slightly more expensive gold-plated finish, seen here, was available. These pristine examples descended in the family of Tiffany Studios' last bookkeeper and were carefully stored and never used. (see 1990.314.2a, b; .4a, b; .8; .10b)
