Evening hat

Department Store Henri Bendel
1910–20
Not on view
The squashy tam crown and eccentrically projecting feathers of this hat are iconic features of the 1910s. The hat's size, color, and garnishment exude drama, while a softening, romantic element is provided by the historically influenced "Elizabethan" style. When such a romantic effect was desired, historical reference was preferred in this period to the heavy, voluminous floral and lace trimmings of the previous decade.
