Roman-style bowl with clear and multicolored band decoration

Italian, Venice (Murano)

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 556

Though Venetian glassmakers imitated ancient forms and techniques, the visual effects could appear strikingly modern. The scalloped edge on this bowl has been created by pulling the glass with pincers while it is in a hot molten state. The resulting shape, however, looks like a cool splash of water. This bowl is a revival of a Roman luxury glass type.
