Commemoration of the Visit of the Dauphin Francis, Son of Francis I, to the City of Lyon in 1533

Medalist: Jacques Gauvain

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 544

The medal relates to a theatrical performance organized by the city of Lyon in honor of a 1533 visit by the dauphin François (1518–1536). The inscription and the image of a boy holding wings and a turtle anticipate a reign governed by Temperance and Fortune, but François was to die before he could ascend the throne.
