Madame Allouard-Jouan
John Singer Sargent American
Not on view
Emma-Marie Allouard-Jouan (1836–1918) was well connected in the worlds of art and politics, but was principally a translator. She also wrote works of fiction under the pseudonym Émile Jouan-Rolland and contributed to French journals, again using pseudonyms. It is not known how she and Sargent met, but she was at the heart of his circle in Paris.
When Sargent exhibited this elegant portrait in 1882, Parisian critics responded to its quiet sensitivity and dignity. The artist inscribed the portrait, in French, to his friend as a "testimony of friendship."
