Marie Pailleron (1840–1913) was the daughter of François Buloz, a highly influential figure in French cultural life. In 1862, she married playwright Édouard Pailleron, who, by the time this portrait was painted, had become a celebrated writer. The second of three commissions from the family, this work was created at their country home at Ronjoux in southeastern France.
In this formal portrait, Sargent defies convention by placing his sitter outside. He unites the narrow, vertical format with a high vantage point and signifies his modernist credentials by placing the elegantly dressed Marie against a verdant lawn punctuated by blossoming crocuses.
