Francis Brooks Chadwick

John Singer Sargent American

Not on view

Sargent created this portrait of expatriate Bostonian painter Francis Brooks Chadwick (1850–1942) in Haarlem in 1880. Sargent, Chadwick, and their friend Ralph Wormeley Curtis had traveled to the Netherlands to study paintings by the Dutch masters, particularly Frans Hals. Sargent’s portrait of Curtis hangs nearby.
Here, Chadwick’s powerfully modeled head stands out from an indistinct background, possibly a landscape. The frontal pose, finely drawn features, and direct gaze result in a penetrating study.
