Arthur Antione Bullot French

Not on view

Before the invention of photography, art students studying the body relied heavily on the printed anatomical manuals of Vesalius and others, and on sculptures after the antique. Although photography offered a wholly new means of representing the human form, Bullot's image is used in this drawing manual to reproduce and perpetuate the conventions photography might instead have been used to replace.
