Panel with Warrior Resting

Late Roman/Early Byzantine

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 302

A male warrior leans heavily to his left as though resting on his shield and spear. His face, seen in three-quarter view, angles downward as if to signal sleep or injury. This plaque and the example showing a Venus of the "Pudica" type may have been carved in the same workshop, and they both likely ornamented a box or other domestic furnishing.
