Prose Poem on Fishing

Zhu Yunming Chinese

Not on view

Zhu Yunming was one of the most gifted and original calligraphers of the Ming dynasty. This long scroll is an example of his dynamic cursive script, in which fluctuating character widths and heights, along with undulating columns, combine to form a dizzying dance of brush and ink. Zhu’s signature reveals that he transcribed this old prose poem about fishing, attributed to Song Yu, after a long day of enjoying flowers and fishing in a lavish garden with a friend. Zhu notes that he worked with a tattered old brush, which may account for a certain clipped bluntness in the strokes.
