Standing Scholar (Prophet?) Turned to the Right (Recto); Standing Scholar (Prophet?) Turned to the Left (Verso)
Germany, Middle Rhine German, Middle Rhine
Not on view
This standing male figure and its verso counterpart have been variously given to the Fleming Hugo van der Goes (1435/40-1482), to an anonymous Netherlandish artist, or to a Burgundian master. Actually, the idiosyncratic draftsmanship is traceable to the Middle Rhine, and the paper is of German manufacture datable to the mid-1460s.
