The raised decoration depicts wild folk, humans, and animals engaged in frenzied activities around a centarlized crowned king, probably Manuel I of Portugal (r. 1495–1521). The agents of Portugal's rapid overseas expansion brought back reports of monstrous and exotic races, possibly reflected in the imagery seen here.
