Most sub-Saharan horns and trumpets are side-blown and single-pitched, although a hole at the tip of many examples may be opened or closed to vary the pitch. Blowholes appearing on the tube's convex or concave side may be culture-specific. Despite diminished use as military instruments, horns and trumpets remain important power symbols in royal regalia and ritual.
