Stela of the Overseer of the Storehouse Amenemhat
Middle Kingdom
Not on view
This object is not part of The Met collection. It was in the Museum for a special exhibition and has been returned to the lender.
Amenemhat is shown making a gesture of respect toward the names of the local deities of Abydos, who are mentioned in the lengthy inscription containing two formulaic religious texts. The first one focuses on the transfiguration of the deceased that would enable Amenemhat to serve Osiris during the annual festival of this god. The second text describes the construction of Amenemhat’s memorial chapel in the sacred city of Abydos, which allowed him to perpetually participate in the annual ritual procession of Osiris.
