Portrait of a Woman, Age 33
With her bold gaze and direct manner, this mixed-race woman offers an intimate glimpse of a subject rarely painted in the eighteenth century. The identity of the painter is unknown, but the inscription, "Aetatis Suae 33," reveals the sitter’s age, while the rose and gold rings symbolize love or betrothal. She is dressed in an elegant rose-colored caraco, or three-quarter length jacket, a black pinner apron of the type worn by needleworkers.
